2023 Nov 04 - On my attachment to furniture
How much furniture do I want to sell? How connected am I to these inanimate pieces of painted wood and coloured fabric? It depends.
The brown end table... When did I find you? I think you can go.
That small bookshelf, I think it was from London. The piano definitely was. I've had it for a long time. I think it was 9 years ago, in 2014. There is a lot of memory attached to that piano. But it's not just the piano. There's a lot of furniture from that period of my life.
I had a girlfriend at the time. She had great taste. When we moved into the house, she insisted that we get nice furniture. Furniture that matches. Furniture that says, "I'm an adult." At the time, I thought it was silly. Here I am, almost ten years later, and I agree. It feels nice to have a connection between everything. It ties the house together, but that's just the surface.
There's a lot of memories in this furniture. Not just buying it. I've read heartfelt documents at the table, stored my clothes in the dresser drawers. There are two dressers. You know, his and hers. There are two end tables for the queen bed.
When I got to Edmonton, a lot of people said they were surprised when they came to my house. A classy place. I think the furniture was part of that.
And I haven't even touched on everything. There's another dresser and a desk that I've had it my whole life. I just now as I write this, I cried at the thought of selling them. I cried when I thought about the kitchen table, too.
There's furniture I bought when we broke up, in London I mean. We got back together for a while, and she always said she hated my rocking chair. It's a behemoth, and I love it, but I don't think I love it as much as some of the other things. Maybe it can go...
And maybe I'll keep more than I thought...
